2018 American Atheists convention: Abandon all hope ye militant atheists who entered there

At the 2018 American Atheists convention, the ex-president of the American Atheist organization David Silverman declared:

It is a hard time to be an atheist activist. This has affected us. And it has affected our community... 

...it has really affected us. We are suffering a level of defeatism that I have never seen before... 

We feel the loss. And we feel like we have lost. We feel like we lost the election... We see this cascade of attack coming down at us over and over from all different directions and we feel like it's over. I have heard so many times it makes me sick. It makes me sad. It feels like we lost. 

The apathy that follows. It doesn't matter. We can't win anyways. It's useless to fight. This apathy is infecting us. It's hurting us. 

And people are reacting to each other now. And so that is causing a division. Lots and lots of division in our movement. Hard, bad division... And that has resulted in a splintering and factioning of the movement that I have never seen before and none of us have. 

In other words, we're in a bad situation and it's getting worse.

Later in 2018, Silverman was fired due to allegations of financial conflicts and sexual assault. After Silverman was terminated from his job at American Atheists, The Washington Post declared concerning Silverman, "Since then, he has lost his job, longtime friends, sleep and weight."

The website Atheism and the City wrote about the 2018 cancellation of the first major atheist conference to be held in New York City:

But none of this is going to happen now because the event has just been canceled. The reasons why are complicated, but it started out difficult enough. The atheist community has splintered into a million shards in recent years. There are the atheist feminists and the atheist anti-feminists, the social justice warrior atheists and the anti-social justice warrior atheists. The pro-PC atheists and the anti-PC atheists. There are pro-Trump atheists and anti pro-Trump atheists. Atheists are split over gamergate, elevatorgate, whether we should organize, or whether we should even call ourselves atheists at all. The divisions go on and on.

In 2018, the atheist PZ Myers quotes an atheist activist who declares: "It’s quite depressing that movement Atheism has turned into such a joke. I valued it so much once." In addition, Myers says the atheist movement is in "shambles" and this is "quite depressing" for him.

Another atheist admits his side is losing badly. He admits the future looks grim for nonreligious people

After reading the material at When Will Anti-Atheism Be Viewed as Bigotry? When Hell Freezes Over, an atheist in a comment section of an atheist blog admits:

Many of us in the atheist/agnostic/secular community are suffering from a delusion that we are winning the culture war. It's not true. We are losing. In fact, we might have already lost. The future looks grim for non-religious people.

Yes, yet another atheist admits defeat and he is now flying the flag of surrender. Please see the related post: Atheist Aron Ra indicates the atheist movement is dead. Now that that Aron Ra has surrendered....

More evidence that the atheist movement is weaker than it was 14 years ago

In January of 2004, the red "atheist" graph has a reading of 44. In January of 2018, the red "atheist" graph has a value of 42.

As various atheists have noted, including atheist Aron Ra, the atheist movement is dead. We are moving into a post-secular age and scholars are increasingly using the term post-secular. The 21st century will be a century of faster and faster desecularization.

In 2017, the atheist activist Lee Moore indicated about American atheist organizations:

If you look at the major atheist groups right now, like the national groups, the ones that are doing the real activist work... They are not bringing in the kind of donations they used to. Most of them are starved for cash. They're downsizing left and right. Because people aren't just giving like they used to. And I talked to a lot of the major donors out there and they said, "Well, we're kind of tired of seeing the atheist community just fight amongst itself and not really get anything done. We'd rather not give money if we don't think it's going to go somewhere.

Atheist Dr. Gordon Stein wrote:

Atheism has long ceased to be a rare and oft-ignored philosophical outlook...It has transformed itself into an active political programme with clear objectives which, though they vary from state to state, unequivocally include the elimination of state religion, religious education, and the enshrinement of scientism (Gordon Stein, Encyclopedia of Politics and Religion, page 74.). 

There is a reactionary element to atheism, For example, the atheist ideology in Muslim countries is a reaction in part to Islam.  On the other hand, the atheists in a culture absorb various aspects of that culture.

In the  Western World,  right-wing, populist nationalism rising in Europe and the United States has increased the prevalence of the secular right within Western atheism. In addition, there is a backlash against feminism within atheism - especially after the Elevatorgate controversy which involved feminists disparaging Richard Dawkins. 

Historically, the atheist population has titled on the left side of the political spectrum.  For example, according to the University of Cambridge, historically, the "most notable spread of atheism was achieved through the success of the 1917 Russian Revolution, which brought the Marxist-Leninists to power." According to the Pew Forum, in the United States: "About two-thirds of atheists (69%) identify as Democrats (or lean in that direction), and a majority (56%) call themselves political liberals(compared with just one-in-ten who say they are conservatives)"

So what is the net affect of right-wing atheism rising within American atheism?

In June 2016, American Interest reported:

First of all, religious belief is still very powerful and widespread, and there is nothing inevitable about its decline. In fact, the proportion of people who say they believe in God actually ticked modestly upward, from 86 percent to 89 percent, since Gallup last asked the question in 2014.

We do live in a multivariable world so atheist infighting might be one of several variables that is causing the promulgation of atheism to be more challenging in the United States.

China and Europe are the two geographic regions where are atheists are the most prevalent. As alluded to above, in Europe right-wing nationalism is rising in reaction to Muslim immigration and anti-European Union sentiments. This is going to cause right-wing atheism to rise within European atheism. And since European atheism affects American atheism, it should cause right-wing atheism to rise within American atheism.

Now when you consider that China is experiencing an explosive growth of Christianity and atheists infighting within Western atheism will in all likelihood increase, the future of atheism looks very bleak.

In 2012, the W. Edwards Deming Institute published a report by the World Future Society which stated:

In 2100, however, the world will likely be only 9% unaffiliated — more religious than in 2012. The peak of the unaffiliated was in 1970 at around 20%, largely due to the influence of European communism. Since communism’s collapse, religion has been experiencing resurgence that will likely continue beyond 2100. All the world’s religions are poised to have enormous numeric growth (with the exceptions of tribal religions and Chinese folk religion), as well as geographic spread with the continuation of migration trends. Adherents of the world’s religions—perhaps particularly Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists—will continue to settle in the formerly Christian and ever-expanding cities of Europe and North America, causing increases of religious pluralism in these areas. Christians and Muslims together will encompass two-thirds of the global population—more than 7 billion individuals. In 2100, the majority of the world’s 11.6 billion residents will be adherents of religious traditions.

Why the HMS Atheism is less seaworthy than the Titanic

Atheism has existed since biblical times. The Bible says, "The fool in his heart says there is no God".

However, issues such as the untenableness of an eternal universe (see: Atheism and the origin of the universe), a fine-tuned universe, the implausibility of abiogenesis are helping atheists to be seen as cranks by many thoughtful people. In addition, discontent among evoltuionists with Neo-Darwinism is growing with no plausible alternative being offered (see: Theory of evolution and little consensus and Recent clamour to revise the modern evolutionary synthesis). In addition, you have Global creationism growing rapidly due to the rapid growth of evangelical Christianity and Islam (see: Growth of evangelical Christianity).

Furthermore, you have the issue of atheism/agnosticism facing an acceleration of 21st century desecularization due to fertility/demographic issues; religious immigration to Europe of people resistant to assimilation; the growth of fundamentalism in Europe and many countries and the rapid Christianization of China. In addition, European nations are hitting "peak secular" (Northern Europe and recently the UK) and even atheists are beginning to realize the failure of the secularization thesis. After peak secular will come growing religious populations in Western countries. As far as America, peak secular will hit in the 21st century due to a rising hispanic population and the effects of globalization. When Americans see atheism/agnosticism imploding in Europe and Asia that probably will have an effect on public opinion.

All of these factors is having an effect of the morale of the atheist population plus you have in-fighting among Western atheism which is further degrading morale (see: Atheist pessimism about the atheist movement).

Right now, the issue of desecularization is being underreported in the press, but that is a very fixable issue. People are trusting the mainstream press less and less and the internet is causing more competition. In addition, a growing religious populations will force the mainstream press to cater to their customers in terms of their reporting. Once the mainstream press starts reporting on the matter of desecularization, people's herd mentality will further accelerate desecularization in the world and within Western societies.

And I expect the in-fighting to continue in Western atheism given: growing political polarization within society as a whole (sharp political differences are greatly helping to cause atheist factions); the quarrelsome nature of atheists and the fact that losing teams often point fingers on who is to blame for their troubles.

The agnostic professor Eric Kaufmann is entirely correct about the implosion of adherents to atheism/agnosticism and the rise of religious fundamentalism in the world. I should have seen this earlier given my university training in some of the social sciences and given the faddish nature of New Atheism. I should have also seen the reactionary nature of New Atheism as being a reaction to growing religious fundamentalism in the world, the resurgence of religion in many countries of the world and the failure of the secularization thesis.

I realize that many proud atheists would prefer not to see a collapse in the number of atheists in the world and engage in the fallacy of exclusion in relation to the above matters. Of course, that can actually work in favor in terms of aiding desecuralization in the world. The strategist Sun Tzu said in order to prevail, you must understand yourself, your opponents and the lay of the land. Denialists are at a distinct disadvantage. The crushing defeat of overconfident secular leftists in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and their post election shock that it happened is certainly testimony to this matter. Secular leftists meltdowns post election and the teary-eyed and self-described militant atheist/leftist Kathy Griffin saying of Trump "He broke me" does show me how fragile secular leftist morale is (see: Secular leftists and psychogenic illness). In the 21st century, secular leftists are certainly totally unprepared to deal with a "badass religion" like fundamentalist Islam. And of course, they are no match for Christendom which has a track record of growth for about 2,000 years.

Atheists did put up a significant degree of opposition to theism from the time of the French Revolution to around the fall of the Soviet Union. But William Shakespeare was right that the world is a stage and an unfolding story. In terms of the play as far as atheism/agnosticism vs. theism play, we are at the point of the denouement the play (the final part of a play, movie, or narrative in which the strands of the plot are drawn together and matters are explained or resolved).

Final note

Given that atheism has existed since biblical times, there probably will be some foolish souls treading water and practicing atheism before the second coming of Jesus Christ, but the days of the HMS Atheism proudly sailing the high seas is nearing an end. The HMS Atheism is taken on water and is being relentless battered by fierce winds and giant waves.

One thing for sure, Jesus has plenty of room in the lifeboat of Christianity for atheists who wish to flee the sinking ship of the HMS Atheism.

Concerning the future of religion/secularism in Europe, professor Eric Kaufmann wrote:

We have performed these unprecedented analyses on several cases. Austria offers us a window into what the future holds. Its census question on religious affiliation permits us to perform cohort component projections, which show the secular population plateauing by 2050, or as early as 2021 if secularism fails to attract lapsed Christians and new Muslim immigrants at the same rate as it has in the past. (Goujon, Skirbekk et al. 2006). 

This task will arguably become far more difficult as the supply of nominal Christians dries up while more secularisation-resistant Muslims and committed rump Christians comprise an increasing share of the population.

In 2017, the British newspaper The Guardian reported:

But, Bullivant told the Observer that the “growth of no religion may have stalled”. After consistent decline, in the past few years the proportion of nones appears to have stabilised. “Younger people tend to be more non-religious, so you’d expect it to keep going – but it hasn’t. The steady growth of non-Christian religions is a contributing factor, but I wonder if everyone who is going to give up their Anglican affiliation has done so by now? We’ve seen a vast shedding of nominal Christianity, and perhaps it’s now down to its hardcore

On December 23, 2012, Eric Kaufmann wrote:

I argue that 97% of the world's population growth is taking place in the developing world, where 95% of people are religious. 

On the other hand, the secular West and East Asia has very low fertility and a rapidly aging population... In the coming decades, the developed world's demand for workers to pay its pensions and work in its service sector will soar alongside the booming supply of young people in the third world. Ergo, we can expect significant immigration to the secular West which will import religious revival on the back of ethnic change. In addition, those with religious beliefs tend to have higher birth rates than the secular population, with fundamentalists having far larger families. The epicentre of these trends will be in immigration gateway cities like New York (a third white), Amsterdam (half Dutch), Los Angeles (28% white), and London, 45% white British.

Razib Khan points out in Discover Magazine, "most secular nations in the world are those of East Asia, in particular what are often termed “Confucian societies.” It is likely therefore that the majority of the world’s atheists are actually East Asian."

East Asia contains about 25 percent of the world’s population. China’s population represents 20 percent of the people on earth.

The largest atheist population in the world is in China. China is seeing an explosive growth of Christianity and the bulk of these Christians are evangelical Christians.

On November 1, 2014, an article in The Economist entitled Cracks in the atheist edifice declared:

Officials are untroubled by the clash between the city’s famously freewheeling capitalism and the Communist Party’s ideology, yet still see religion and its symbols as affronts to the party’s atheism... 

Yang Fenggang of Purdue University, in Indiana, says the Christian church in China has grown by an average of 10% a year since 1980. He reckons that on current trends there will be 250 million Christians by around 2030, making China’s Christian population the largest in the world. Mr. Yang says this speed of growth is similar to that seen in fourth-century Rome just before the conversion of Constantine, which paved the way for Christianity to become the religion of his empire.

The atheist movement is disintegrating

Modern atheism: It came in with a bang in many areas and now it is going out with a whimper

Who is being very quiet relating to an issue concerning atheism? Keep reading and find out!

In my article A key ally of atheists is much weaker and goes AWOL. Google news and other data reveal another train wreck for the atheist movement, I point out that people around the world trust the mainstream news organizations less and less. I also pointed out that mainstream media has a pro-atheism bias.

In the 20th century, atheism expanded with a bang. According to the University of Cambridge, historically, the "most notable spread of atheism was achieved through the success of the 1917 Russian Revolution, which brought the Marxist-Leninists to power."

Lately, I have put in the word "atheism" into Google News and the pace of the stories on atheism is like molasses.  It is the slowest moving in terms of news stories that I have ever seen. 

I predicted that news related to Donald Trump would help to crowd out news stories on atheism. I also predicted that secular leftists would do less atheist activism and shift to activities related to opposing Donald Trump. Furthermore, I pointed out that many secular leftists have been in a state of shock and demoralization related to the Trump presidency. In addition, I pointed to British/American polling indicating that the growth of atheism appears to have currently peaked. And of course, i pointed out that not only is the percentage of atheists shrinking in the world, but scholarly data indicates the that actually number of atheists in the world may now be shrinking. 

And remember when I said that 2017 is going to be a TERRIBLE year for atheism. How right was I?

But is the media widely reporting on the issue of the decline of atheism? No, it is not. It is largely very quiet on this issue. As I mentioned above, Google News is providing news articles on atheism at a very slow pace.

Modern atheism came into a bang in communist  areas of the world, but now atheism as a whole is going out with a whimper. Please read the article: Global atheism statistics

Death of atheism in the Western world in the 20th century

A discussion string was posted at a popular atheist/agnostic website entitled Being true, earnest and logically coherent with our atheism.  The post began thusly: "I am going to charge atheists - virtually all of us here - with a serious accusation. There's a bug infecting their system known as the agnostic view."

Atheism, as defined by the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy, and other philosophy reference works, is the denial of the existence of God.

Paul Edwards, who was a prominent atheist and editor of the Encyclopedia of Philosophy, defined an atheist as "a person who maintains that there is no God.

Agnosticism is, in weaker forms, an affirmation of ignorance regarding the existence of a God or gods, and in stronger forms, the assertion that the existence of a deity or deities is unknowable.

Beginning in the latter portion of the 20th century and continuing beyond, many agnostics/atheists have argued that the definition of atheism should be defined as a mere lack of belief in God or gods. This diluted definition of atheism began to gather steam due a 1976 book by Anthony Flew who was influential atheist among atheists at the time. Flew later became a theist. 

For all intents and purposes, atheism died in the West in the 20th century. Atheism in the Western World was replaced by agnosticism. 

Agnosticism has waning influence in the world 

Pew Research indicated in their report The Future of World Religions: Population Growth Projections, 2010-2050 that agnostics and atheists “will make up a declining share of the world’s total population.” In other words, the percentage of people who are agnostics in the world is going down. 

Data compiled by the Center for the Study of Global Christianity (CSGC) at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (GCTS) indicates the actual number of atheists began decreasing in the world around 2017 (see: Global atheism statistics ).  

According to CSGC, when will the actual number of agnostics in the world experience decreasing numbers? According to CSGC, in 2025 there will be 707,857,000 agnostics in the world. By 2050, there will be 698,244,000 agnostics in the world (see: Projection of religion/irreligion in the world). 

Europe: Irreligion vs. religion in the 21st century

Eric Kaufmann is a professor of politics at Birkbeck College, University of London and author. His academic research specialty is how demographic changes affect religion/irreligion and politics. He was a Fellow in the Religion in International Affairs Program, Belfer Center, Kennedy School, Harvard University, 2008-9. In 2008, he won the Richard Rose Prize of the Political Studies Association for a scholar under 40 years old.

Evolutionists, atheists and agnostics: Where is your master plan to reverse your decline?

Evolutionists, atheists and agnostics: Where is your master plan to reverse your global decline?

I certainly documented your decline and how it will affect Western countries. You have given no credible disputation of this matter. We also documented the growth of creationism within Western countries. So, what are you going to do about it? 

So many times I have heard about the supposed intellectual superiority of your communities, yet when the water gets rough, you don't seem to have back up plans.

Furthermore, you seem incapable of coming up with an effective plan to reverse things. Given that you always prattle on about supposed advanced cultures on other planets, I would have thought if you were serious that you not only would have a global plan for the evolutionist community, but a plan for the entire universe as well! You seem to have neither! Needless to say, I am not surprised that you cannot satisfactorily answer the 15 questions for evolutionists.

You are all in denial or have come to the realization that it is impossible to oppose God and win. I am not impressed with your intellectual prowess - quite the opposite really. God has immensely more power and wisdom than all the members of your communities combined and we both know it. 

5 important issues relating to atheism, agnosticism and evolutionism

In recent posts, I covered these 5 important areas:

1. The most ardent defenders of evolutionism have historically been atheists and their ideological cousins agnostics. The most effective way to combat atheism/agnosticism is to attack evolutionism as it cuts off their ideological supply lines.

As Professor Eric Kaufmann declared to a secular audience: "The trends that are happening worldwide inevitably in an age of globalization are going to affect us."

5. Christians and Christian creationist are increasingly using the internet in terms of evangelism and have ambitious plans for the future. They are obtaining excellent results. There are Christians in the Western World who have a global plan to spread Christianity. Atheism has expended significant effort in the past via the internet with little to show for it. In addition, the atheist internet community has been in a 4 year slump in terms of web traffic. Furthermore, there is a lack of strong leadership within the atheist community.

Atheists and evolutionists: What is your global master plan to reverse things? 

Atheists and agnostics tend to tilt towards the left politically (Historically, they have embraced communism, socialism and liberalism). In addition, leftists tend to be globalist and less nationalistic. In addition, they tend to work with each other across the globe. 

So evolutionists, atheists and agnostics, where is your plan to reverse things? Where are the plans of notable atheists, agnostics and evolutionists or notable organizations representing these communities? 

The Birkbeck College, University of London professor Eric Kaufmann using a multitude of demographic studies argues in an academic paper entitled Shall the Righteous Inherit the Earth? Demography and Politics in the Twenty-First Century the decline of atheism in terms of its global adherents is an established trend that will persist for the foreseeable future and the rate of decline will accelerate and affect the Western World. By in large, these outspoken evolutionists are awfully silent about the aforementioned decline: Richard Dawkins, PZ Myers, Sam Harris, Daniel Dennette, Penn Jillette, Eugenie Scott, Dan Barker, atheists and agnostics in academia, evolutionists in academia, British Humanist Society, National Academies of Sciences, National Center for Science Education, evolution promoting natural science journals, evolution promoting social science journals, evolution leaning journalists, American Atheists, YouTube atheists Thunderf00t and TheAmazingAtheist, Matt Dillahunty, the Skepchick community, prominent French evolutionists and atheists/agnostics, prominent secularist Europeans in other countries, Chinese communists and others. Why are all these outspoken people suddenly so silent? 

And the cursory treatment of this issue by atheists PZ Myers and Nigel Barber were absolutely a joke. Barber confidently proclaimed that atheism would prevail against religion by 2038 without providing detailed analysis. It's almost as if he picked the year 2038 out of a hat! I mean why not 2040? Even the immensely weird and bellicose North Korean atheists and communists are silent about this matter. Recently, I saw a documentary on North Korea and the narrator for that documentary said that North Korea was the weirdest place on earth. I said to myself, the most friendly land towards atheism and evolutionism and the most unfriendly land towards biblical Christianity is also the weirdest. Go figure!

North Korea is a surreal country abounding in phoniness and propaganda. Sounds a lot like the ideologies of atheism and evolutionism, doesn't it? Given the bizarre behavior of many atheists/agnostics and evolutionists that I have seen, I cannot say that I am surprised. 

The silence the militant evolutionists is absolutely deafening. Cat got your tongue evolutionists? Of course, even if you were to come up with a plan in spite of all the evidence that it would not work, we all know it would fail miserably, don't we? 

Evolutionists, why are you going to be so late in talking about these growing problems as a whole? Is it due to: pride, thoughtlessness, denialism, complacency, ignorance and a growing realization that you cannot win?

Of course, deep down dogmatic evolutionists know that evolutionism is pseudoscience so a a sacrificial and heroic effort is not in the cards, is it? Sullenly taking your lumps is about the best you can do at this point.
